Underlying a classical looking stair case for Auckland University is an innovative approach to their construction using GRC (Glass fibre reinforced concrete). The stair treads were made using a GRC structural backer with a decorative Terrazzo face at only 30mm thick. Using GRC meant that the thickness and therefore weight of each tread was reduced by 70% in comparison to traditional concrete construction resulting in drastically reduced materials and installation time.

An innovative steel frame and GRC cladding system was also used for the balustrades and pillars providing an efficient conduit to run hidden electrical services with easy access for future maintenance.
