Mould design and fabrication

GRC is either wet cast or more typically sprayed into moulds and the design and fabrication of the moulds is key to the successful manufacture of GRC products. Much of our senior in-house talent and expertise is occupied with the design, engineering and manufacture of moulds in the most cost effective and timely manner. Moulds can typically be made from a variety of materials such as MDF, Plywood, Steel, Fibreglass and Polyurethane rubber etc or a combination of one or all of these materials and we can advise on the most appropriate material and technique for your project.

Careful consideration is taken to design the mould in the most appropriate material suitable for each project or application eg a single use one-off product will likely have a mould made using low cost material such as MDF whereas a mass produced product may require a mould to be made in fibreglass with a PUR rubber liner that can be used many 100’s of times.

Stringent Quality control

GRC is a highly technical composite material that can be relatively straight forward to make but very difficult to get right without a stringent quality control regime. In its basic form GRC is made from relatively few constituent ingredients (e.g. cement, fine aggregate, water and glass fibres) however substantial understanding of materials and techniques are required to take advantage of GRC’s outstanding performance characteristics. Suitable GRC quality control standards are much closer to those required for high performance composites seen in Formula 1 and America’s cup than to ordinary precast concrete production.
